Should you care about AI search yet?

More customers are asking ChatGPT and Google's AI for recommendations instead of scrolling results. Here's who's affected now, who isn't, and the groundwork that pays either way.

The short answer

Yes, but not the way the hype suggests. AI answers pull from the same reviews, listings and pages Google already uses. Get those right and you show up in both.

What this means for you

  • AI assistants recommend businesses by reading your Google listing, your reviews, your website and third-party mentions. There's no separate 'AI listing' to buy.
  • If customers ask 'who's the best plumber near me', local intent still routes through Google Maps data. Your Business Profile matters more, not less.
  • Answer engines quote pages that answer a question directly in plain language. Long, vague service pages get skipped.
  • The businesses gaining ground are the ones with clear structured data, consistent details everywhere, and pages written like answers.

You’ve probably seen the pitch: “traditional SEO is dead, you need to optimize for AI.” Some of that is true. Most of it is a sales tactic. Here’s the honest version.

What’s actually changed

For informational questions (“how often should I service my furnace”), AI answers now sit at the top of Google and in ChatGPT, and fewer people click through to websites. If your marketing depended on blog traffic for those questions, you’ve felt it.

For buying questions (“best furnace repair in Plano”), the picture is different. AI assistants still lean heavily on Google’s local data: your Business Profile, your review count and rating, and how consistently your details appear across the web. They also read your website to understand what you do.

So the businesses winning in AI search are, mostly, the businesses that were already winning in local search, plus a few that write their pages unusually clearly.

How AI decides who to recommend

Nobody outside the labs knows the exact recipe, but the pattern is consistent across the answers we test for clients:

  • Entity clarity. The AI needs to be sure who you are. Matching details everywhere, a clear description, and structured data on your site all help.
  • Third-party corroboration. Reviews, directory listings, local news mentions, and industry sites. The AI trusts what others say about you more than what you say.
  • Direct answers. Pages that state plainly what you do, for whom, at what price range, and where, get quoted. Pages that open with “Welcome to our website” don’t.
  • Recency. Fresh reviews and updated content signal you’re still in business and still good.

What’s not worth paying for yet

Anyone selling you a guaranteed placement in ChatGPT is guessing. There’s no ad product for most local queries, and the answers change week to week. Be skeptical of dashboards that show “AI visibility scores” without showing you the actual answers customers see.

What is worth it

Monitoring the real answers monthly for your key questions, fixing the gaps they reveal, and steadily earning the kinds of mentions AI systems cite. That’s slow, unglamorous, and it’s the same work that improves your Google ranking, which is why we bundle the two.

What to do this week

  1. 01Ask ChatGPT and Google's AI mode the question your customers would ask, including your city. Note who shows up and why.
  2. 02Check that your name, address, phone, hours and services match exactly on Google, your website, Yelp and Facebook.
  3. 03Rewrite your main service page's first paragraph as a direct answer to 'what do you do, for whom, and where'.
  4. 04Add FAQ sections to your top pages with real customer questions, answered in two or three sentences each.

The map pack is your real homepage

For most local searches, customers pick from the three businesses on the map and never scroll further. Here's how to get into that box and stay there.
