The map pack is your real homepage

For most local searches, customers pick from the three businesses on the map and never scroll further. Here's how to get into that box and stay there.

The short answer

Your Google Business Profile, not your website, is the first thing most local customers see. Complete it fully, feed it reviews and photos, and make sure your details match everywhere.

What this means for you

  • The three businesses shown on the map get most of the calls for 'near me' searches. Position four might as well be page two.
  • Google picks the three based on relevance (categories and services you've listed), distance, and prominence (reviews, links, mentions).
  • Your profile is a living page. Weekly photos, posts, and answered questions signal an active business and keep you in the box.
  • Mismatched details across the web (an old address on a directory, a second phone number) quietly hurt you.

Search “plumber near me” on your phone. Notice what happens: you get a map with three businesses, their ratings, and call buttons. Most people tap one of those three. Some scroll to the organic results. Almost nobody looks at the second page.

That map box is your real homepage. Your website matters, but for local customers it comes second.

How Google picks the three

Google is open about the three factors:

Relevance. How well your profile matches what was searched. That’s driven by your primary category, your secondary categories, and the services you’ve listed with descriptions. Many businesses lose here by leaving categories half-filled.

Distance. How close you are to the searcher, or to the place they named. You can’t move your shop, but a correct service area and consistent address help Google place you.

Prominence. How well-known you are, as measured by reviews (count, rating, recency), mentions on other sites, links, and how often people interact with your profile.

The profile most businesses never finish

Open your Business Profile and check: Do you have every relevant category? Are your services listed with descriptions, not just names? Is your description written for a customer, or is it blank? Are hours correct, including holidays? Do you have more than five photos, and are any from this year?

Every gap is a place a competitor can pass you.

Keep it alive

Google favors profiles that look like an active business. That means:

  • Photos added regularly, ideally weekly
  • A short post every week or two: an offer, a finished job, a seasonal reminder
  • Every review answered
  • The Q&A section seeded with real questions and your answers

None of this takes more than fifteen minutes a week once it’s a habit. Or it’s the sort of thing a managed listings service does for you.

The quiet killer: inconsistent details

Your name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere: your site, Google, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, and the dozens of directories you’ve never heard of. An old address from a previous location, or a tracking phone number on one listing, makes Google less sure which business is which. Cleaning this up is tedious and is usually the first thing we do for a new client, because it’s often the reason a good business is sitting in position five.

What to do this week

  1. 01Claim and fully complete your Business Profile: primary category, every relevant secondary category, services with descriptions, hours, and a real description.
  2. 02Upload ten real photos: exterior, interior, team, work in progress, finished work. Then add two a week.
  3. 03Search your business name and phone number. Fix every listing with a wrong address, hours, or phone.
  4. 04Turn on messaging and answer the 'Questions & answers' section yourself with the questions customers ask most.
